How to Create a Feminist Burlesque Scene @ Feministe.

I’ve been privileged enough to spend a good portion of the last two summers involved in creating a queer neo-burlesque scene in Mexico City with an amazing group of talented individuals. It all started two years ago when a group of new chilango friends found out I did burlesque and arranged for me to perform at the Festival Lésbico in Mexico City. I’d never performed for such a huge lesbian audience before, and it stands out in my memory as one of the best shows of my life. The crowd was amazingly supportive, cheering and hollering for more, offering me heartfelt congratulations as I walked off the stage, and eagerly talking to me and asking me questions after the show.

It was due to the success of that performance that my friends and I planned for me to teach a burlesque workshop in Mexico City the following summer, which was my first time teaching a burlesque workshop, as well as my first time teaching exclusively in Spanish. A friend of mine who had taught burlesque workshops in New York told it to me straight, “Teach from your experience, from your strengths. If you’re not a great dancer, don’t teach them how to dance. Teach what you know.” It was excellent advice, and in addition to teaching a bit about the burlesque history and what I believe are the elements of an interesting and entertaining burlesque act, I also tried to work conversations about feminist burlesque into the workshop.

I was so proud of the acts that were spawned by that workshop, and remain awed by the creativity and bravery of the participants, many of whom had never been on a stage before, let alone done a strip-tease before. Even more impressive than our “recital,” however, was the burlesque troupe that grew out of this workshop when the participants decided to continue performing after I had gone back to New York, producing their own shows in a city that doesn’t exactly have a surfeit of queer-friendly performance venues.

Yes EROTICON is in just two weeks - Saturday, October 13th!

The good news is we have done this 22 times before and so many details get worked out via emails, parties and myspace messages that it always works out easily.

That being said if you are interested in lending a hand this year, we would sure appreciate your help. Some of you are already helping in performances or the BDSM playspace. If you would like to volunteer or come in and say hi we will have a meeting on Tuesday the 2nd next week:

Tuesday October 2nd
7pm - 8:30p
Banneker Community Center - enter south stairs, first room on your right 930 W. 7th St

This meeting should be a fun one as we will get to decide on what fun extras we want as well as making sure Polaroid shifts are taken care of.

Can't make it but want to help? Drop me an email with what you want to do and we'll be thankful.

Want to know how things are going so far? Don't tell anyone but this is what is confirmed:

Different Drummer Belly Dancers
Edible Beauty
DJ?s: Mr. E and Peasant Disco
IMAS play space
Activism table
Three Contests: Kissing, Boot/Shoe (2 categories), EROTICON Erotic Art display by MOJO, GuerrillaArt.net EROTICON Speed Dating & Networking: 9:30 ? 10:00

As you can see, we could use a performance or two to help fill out the night, I know many of you are crafty exhibitionists, so let me know what we can do on short notice.

Looking like a good night to me! See you all soon Kelly McBride

5:17 pm - eroticon?

Hi Fanties--any idea what's going on with Eroticon? It's happening again this year, on October 13th, and I don't know whether Fantalesque is/can be/should be involved again. I would love to do a burlesque number, but as I'm pretty busy with school, I could probably only manage to do a solo to recorded music... as much fun and successful as last year's Danse Macabre was, the fact that there were multiple people and live music involved made it a tad stressful.

11:55 am - Fanties Heads Up! Meeting Friday Night!

Hey ladies (and the occasional gent)!

It's that time of year again!

We have a little over a month to get our practices in and performances planned for Eroticon!

Kelly, the organizer, wants bigger more professional performances this year and I think that sounds awesome. I have a freer schedule and access to many more resources to help make that happen!

What does that mean? More intensive practices, more delving into traditional as well as Neoburlesque (performances, etc!) Pasties! Shimmy belts! Fans! Glitter! Glam! Bumping and Grinding!

Isn't it awesome?

We've already got a performance in the works by the lovely violi and prosewitch that just needs the okay from Kelly for sound (which I am very excited about!)

Here's the skinny!

I'll be in town Friday night and I'd really like to get the gals together - I know that prosewitch is busy for the first part of the evening...what are your schedules like, ladies, and what time could you meet?

I love ya ladies!

This came in my email, I have no idea why but I'm not complaining.

I just think they're too expensive to buy without actually trying on. I feel that way about most clothes.

2:50 pm - Invitation from Mari

Hey guys,

As most of you know I work for the Office of Women's Affairs on the IUB campus. We're currently planning an all women talent show in honor of Women's History Month in March. We would love (LOVE) for you guys to do an act. It'd have to be toned down a bit since it's on campus. More details will be forthcoming, but I wanted to see if you're interested.

9:13 pm - burlesque + bellydancing

Hey Fanties--burlesque and bellydancing meet: Belly Dance, Burlesque and Beyond:Confessions of a Post Modern Showgirl Keep an eye out for the part where the author says that all burlesque usually has some bellydancing component to it... ;)

This deals with a lot of my insecurities about being a feminist bellydancer about to start doing burlesque. Really, what it comes down to for me is that both bellydancing and burlesque are sexy, but they can't just be reduced to sex appeal. Both are performed in front of an audience, but the performer(s) is/are usually doing it for pleasure as well. Both dance forms have culture, history, art, community, and individual innovation interlocking throughout them--and they're sexy, but they're not just about sex. Then again, for me, not even sex is just about sex.

3:19 pm - Two Things: Eroticon Meeting Tonight and Burlesque Names!

Hey ladies (and gentleman)...

First, there is an Eroticon Meeting tonight - I think it would be nice if someone could pop in and say hello at it (I can't, being stuck 2 hours away!)

The info is:

7pm - 8pm
Banneker Community Center
930 W. 7th St (7th and Elm)
Go in the front door, we are in the first room to your right as you

Secondly, those of you who are members of the troupe need to come up with a stage burlesque name!

What kind of name do you need?

An example of some of our Burlesque Names:

Grimm Tydings (selenya)

Ivy deVine (solestria's old name)

Cherry Poppins (solestria's new name)

Vilia Ness (tooth_and_claw)

Ms. Anne Thrope (violi)

Butch McMann (gollumgollum)

Idol Hans (I dunno, I just liked this one. *G*)

You can also use nearly anything French. ;-)

Post in a comment here if you have a name you'd like to use!

3:19 pm - Ladies of Fantalesque

Hello again ladies!

It's the cheeriest goth around, Grimm! It seems as though Saturday the 27th is going to be our next meeting day. During that meeting, we can hash out our performances for Eroticon, a team plan for Eroticon, pastie making sessions, and details of upcoming gigs and the such!

We need a meeting place, however...anyone have any grand ideas?

6:38 pm - burlesque documentary!

Hello ladies! Hope y'all are having a good summer... I'm having fun cavorting around Europe, though I managed not to see any burlesque shows while here in Paris, go figure. :(

Anyway, I read in a recent issue of some fashion magazine (either Elle, Marie Claire, or Jane) that there's a documentary about American burlesque being aired on a cable channel in the next month. Not much info to go on, I know, but the movie is called Pretty Things. I have sketchy internet access and no TV access, so maybe someone could look it up and tape it?

I'll be back in Bloomington starting Jult 24th, and even though I've got a busy semester ahead, I'm really excited about Eroticon! I've been mentally choreographing my Dance of the Seven Veils, hehe....
